A Legacy of Dedication and Innovation

In the picturesque region of Tweed, a family-owned business has been quietly making its mark on the Australian transport and construction industry for more than eight decades. Brims Transport, founded in 1941, has evolved from humble beginnings into a renowned name in the sector, known for its dedication to quality and innovation.

Ian Brims of Brims Transport

Ian Brims, who now steers the company, has a lifetime of experience that started in childhood. Instead of typical weekend sports, Ian’s Saturdays were spent gaining hands-on experience with trucks and machinery alongside his father. This early exposure not only imbued him with a deep understanding of the business but also instilled a lasting passion for the industry. “We used to come home from school, and we’d jump in one of the four-wheel drive army trucks and go and get a load of bananas,” Ian recalls, reflecting on the foundational years of his career.

The company saw significant expansion between 1980 and 2015, when Brims Transport became heavily involved in earthworks. Ian found a particular satisfaction in transforming landscapes, turning undeveloped land into thriving communities. “It was great to see a piece of land that was just trees or grassland and then go back three or four years later, and it’s full of houses and whatever else needed,” he shares.

As the business environment and industry demands shifted, so did the focus of Brims Transport. The company ventured into specialised transport solutions, including powder tanker work, truck and dog operations, and low loader work. The transition into handling concrete with cement tankers marked another strategic evolution, growing from a single truck to a fleet tailored for diversified operations.

Ian’s choice of vehicles underscores the company’s commitment to quality and reliability, with Kenworths being a favoured choice due to their performance and durability. “I have driven a couple of other brands of trucks, but they just haven’t got the get-up-and-go like the Kenworth has. That’s why we like the Kenworths; they’re a really great truck to drive,” Ian explains.

“I’m a bit taken back by being called a Kenworth Legend, I’m very honoured to think that I’ll be called that. Thank you, Kenworth, for that honour.”

Milestones have punctuated Brims Transport’s journey, not least of which were the celebrations of long-standing partnerships and anniversaries. In 2008, the company celebrated 50 years in partnership with Brown and Hurley, a significant dealer in the trucking industry. To commemorate this partnership, Ian decided to do something special, which set a precedent for future milestones. By 2018, Brims Transport celebrated 60 years, coinciding with the release of the limited edition Legend 900. Embracing the moment, Ian acquired this model, followed by the Legend SAR to commemorate 80 years of their own business. These trucks are not just functional assets but symbols of the company’s enduring legacy, adorned with murals of Ian’s parents and a long-time friend, Kev Hurley.

The recognition of Ian Brims as a Kenworth Legend is a testament to his impact on the industry—a title he accepts with humility and gratitude. “I’m a bit taken back by being called a Kenworth Legend, I’m very honoured to think that I’ll be called that. Thank you, Kenworth, for that honour,” he remarks.
