Kenworth to Produce Natural Gas Trucks in Australia

In yet another step in Australian truck manufacturing innovation, Kenworth Trucks and Westport Innovations Inc. announce that the companies will jointly develop and commercialise liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuelled trucks for the Australian market.

Kenworth Australia, a division of PACCAR Australia Pty Ltd, has decided to take the lead role in developing the first local OEM solution for the design, manufacture and sales of LNG powered trucks.

The commercial introduction of LNG to this market makes sense on many fronts – commercially, economically and environmentally, by utilising an abundant domestic natural gas resource, reducing Australia’s reliance on imported diesel, and significantly reducing greenhouse gas and particulate matter (PM) emissions.

Production at Kenworth’s Bayswater factory in Victoria will commence Q2 2009, beginning with the T908, K108 and T408SAR and rolled out across additional models into the future.

At this time, there are no other heavy-duty manufacturers providing this technology in Australia.

Australia’s unique operating conditions and need for high-power outputs are a good fit for Westport’s HPDI technology and Kenworth’s leading truck models,” said Joe Rizzo, Managing Director of PACCAR Australia.  “Our customers have been seeking economic greenhouse gas reductions that work productively in their operations, and Kenworth is proud to be able to offer that combination in a factory-built product in Australia.”

“With an abundant, low-cost, domestic natural gas supply, Australia makes an excellent market for Westport’s high-performance heavy-duty LNG engine and fuel system,” added Michael Gallagher, President and Chief Operating Officer of Westport.  “Our demonstrated greenhouse gas reductions of 20-25% relative to diesel engines, 95% diesel substitution levels, and power output up to 580 horsepower are clear advantages of Westport technology.  PACCAR’s leadership in providing factory-built LNG Kenworth trucks shows their commitment to the environment and the economic concerns of their customers.”

Westport’s ISX G and LNG System

The Westport high pressure direct injection (HPDI) engine is based on the class-leading Cummins ISX diesel engine with cooled EGR.   Westport’s direct-injection LNG version of the engine is fuelled with vaporized LNG — a safe, cost effective, low carbon, and low emissions fuel.  The Westport LNG system is certified to the latest Australian Design Rules (ADR 80/02 and ADR 30/01) in ratings up to 580 horsepower and 1850 lb-ft torque.

Westport's engine and LNG fuel system for heavy-duty trucks allows trucking fleets to move to lower-cost, domestically available natural gas while offering industry-leading greenhouse gas reductions compared with similar diesel engines.

Kenworth’s leadership in providing factory-built HPDI trucks shows Australian technical design expertise, commitment to the environment and the economic concerns of it’s customers.

Potential Benefits

Australia’s economy and freight task relies heavily on road freight employing diesel fuel.  Due to Australian demographics much of this road freight cannot be contested by other transport means.  Given this reliance on diesel fuel, more widespread use of LNG technology for Australian road transport may produce the following benefits:

1.      Reduced emissions/greenhouse gasses.  The Westport LNG system provides greenhouse gas reductions of 20-25% against an equivalent diesel engine, which is a significant impact on reducing truck exhaust emissions.

2.      LNG is currently a lower cost fuel source.  Diesel fuel is a major component of overall freight costs.  Therefore the widespread use of LNG under current price structures could reduce the direct and indirect impact of escalating diesel fuel costs to consumers.

3.      LNG is produced domestically from Australia’s vast reserves of natural gas.  Aside from the many economic benefits, reducing our reliance on purchasing imported diesel fuels could provide some insulation from world events and thereby improve security for our economic future.

The Australian Government has been supportive of the use of LNG as a transport fuel. Early adopters of the technology under demonstration programs, transport companies Mitchell Corp., Sands Fridge Lines and Murray Goulburn Cooperative have established their commitment and leadership in the reduction of green house gases in Australia.
